The Importance of Being a Mindful Parent

Our children look to us for answers – our behavior is a subconscious answer to our children. What is your behavior telling your children?

Welcome to Cosmi, where our focus is giving you the best tools to be the best parents!

As parents, we all want to provide our children with the best possible start in life. We want to make sure that our children are safe, happy and healthy. Unfortunately, it can be hard to find the time and energy to truly nurture our children and protect their mental health.

Thankfully, mindfulness practices offer an effective way for parents to parent better and safeguard their children’s mental health. Through mindful parenting, parents can give their children the emotional support and guidance they need to grow up feeling secure and confident.

So, what exactly is mindful parenting?

Mindful parenting is based on the idea that parents can be more mindful and attentive to their children’s needs. Mindful parenting involves becoming aware of your own emotions, thoughts, and behaviours and being present in the moment with your child. This helps parents to become more aware of their child’s needs, wants and feelings. When parents become more mindful and practice mindful parenting, they can better manage stress.

How Stress Affects Our Bodies and Minds

This is because our bodies themselves respond to stress. Stress isn’t just psychological, but psychophysiological – it affects our bodies (physiological) and minds (psychological) together (psychophysiological). Our bodies produce stress hormones, so by the time you feel stressed, you’re already passed the point of management and are now in crisis. Stress must be a preventative practice.

By being more mindful, parents can respond in a more balanced and healthy way to their children’s needs and behavior, while teaching their children (and themselves) preventative tools and reducing stress.

Mindfulness and Mental Health

Mindful parenting also encourages parents to be more aware of their own mental health. When parents become mindful of their own mental state, they can recognize and address any signs of stress or anxiety in themselves before it becomes too overwhelming. This can help parents to better manage their own stress and prevent it from having a negative effect on their children.

Mindfulness Creates Empathetic Humans

Mindful parenting also involves taking a mindful approach to parenting decisions. This means that parents take into account the needs of the family as a whole, rather than making decisions based solely on the needs of the child. Parents are encouraged to take the time to consider the consequences of their decisions and how they may affect their child’s mental health. In doing so, we begin to understand our child’s perspective: we understand their fears, their stresses, and, most importantly, their hopes. As we teach our children mindfulness, they adopt similar systems of thought. These systems allow us to put ourselves into someone else’s shoes – empathy. The more we practice these methods, the better we become at being empathetic.

At Cosmi, we believe that mindful parenting is essential to protecting our children’s mental health and helping them to achieve their full potential. With mindful parenting, parents can provide their children with the emotional support and guidance they need to grow up feeling secure and confident.
